Arteriosclerosis is the leading cause of death in the Western World. Although it is clearly multifactorial in origin, many studies, both in epidemiology and in animal models, have established an etiologic role for lipoprotein-derived lipids in atherogenesis. Thus, it is important for virtually all practitioners to understand the fundamentals of the lipid biochemical economy and the transport of lipids in lipoproteins in order to comprehend mechanisms underlying hyperlipidemia and to effect a rational selection of therapy.
