In eight chapters, this text surveys organization, functioning, management, education, and evaluation as these topics relate to the more effective and more efficient operation of intensive-care units. The chapter most likely to be of value to academic physicians is that on patients, with its discussion of measuring patient types, previous health status, severity of illness, evolution of severity, and stratification of cases and case data. All chapters are focused on European practice.
