The four award lectures serve as authoritative and detailed reviews of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, electrical properties of mammalian neurons in relation to central nervous system function, development of neural architecture in animals, and regulators of cell function in the brain. Each lecture is preceded by a short biographic sketch of the great historical figure whose work was an important progenitor of what the lecture considers: Montalcini, Galvani, Golgi, and Erspamer.
