A major void in material available on infections in intravenous drug abusers (IVDAs) is now filled. Standard reference textbooks in infectious diseases (for example, Mandell and Livingston's Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases) only provide a brief overview of this complex topic. Levine and Sobel are editors of the best single source of information about infections in IVDAs that I have read. Not only is the literature on various related subjects reviewed, but the editors' own extensive experience with infections in IVDAs in Detroit, Michigan, gives added relevance to the material.
