To the Editors: Many studies have shown that regular physical activity improves cardiovascular health. Blood pressure falls (1, 2), and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level (3) rises with exercise. However, it has not been determined what type and how much exercise is most beneficial for blood pressure reduction.
We offered a 7-week walking program to the employees of the Milwaukee Veterans Affairs Medical Center to determine if unsupervised exercise would reduce blood pressure. Employees were asked to walk in an attempt to reach a predetermined mileage goal in the 7-week time frame. Walking was done either at home or
