The broad field of therapeutic intravascular catheterization has grown explosively since the late 1970s. For both practitioners and patients it represents a major portion of the practice of clinical cardiology. Large, general cardiology textbooks have been able to keep pace with the rapid development in this field. Thus, a clear need has arisen for textbooks devoted solely to interventional cardiology. The techniques of balloon valvuloplasty, laser angioplasty, atherectomy, and pharmaco-therapy as adjunct therapy to these techniques continue to develop rapidly.
