Few disease processes require greater need for rapid patient evaluation, application of proper diagnostic tools, clarity of clinical thinking in defining the differential diagnostic possibilities, and use of appropriate therapeutic interventions than do infections within the central nervous system. Attendant morbidity and mortality may be adversely effected when optimal management is not used within the first few hours of the patient's medical care.
