Once you've found her, cowering
in the hall linen closet,
and carried her down
the back staircase, draped over
your arm like the handles
of your leather handbag,
and set her feet down on
the worn basement steps,
you whisper, God bless,
sweetheart, go catch a mouse.
And closing the door
behind your benediction,
hear the baby still scream
decrescendos of MAA-mee!
Each MAA-mee! makes me
slightly shift my position
more facedown, more sunk
in the living room sofa.
As you trudge up the stairs
I would think you must wonder
how you could have married
a sloth like yours...
